Have you discovered the magic of Picture Talk activities? They are an incredible low prep way to give your Spanish students tons of input. But after a while, students can get tired of the same style of activity over and over. We get excited about new activities, right? But what teacher has the time or energy to constantly reinvent the wheel? Read on to discover 4 extension activities you can do to mix up Picture Talk and keep your Spanish students excited!
Gallery walk
Post a variety of pictures around the room. Make a quick true/false worksheet that they can answer as they move around the room looking at the images. OR Have your students travel the room with a partner describing each picture in Spanish either out loud or in writing. This can even be done in a lower level class where they simply identify what they see in the pictures. For example, print lots of pictures of crazy weather and students simply identify the type of weather they see like “llueve.”
Write and discuss based on a background story you created for the picture
As you discuss the image with your students, get creative! Create a background story about the people or place in the picture with their input. Then write it out in Spanish at the end to use the next day as a reading comprehension activity.
Create a skit as if you’re the people in the picture
My silly, fun loving students love this! Especially if you created a back story for the image, you can get them to follow your instructions in Spanish as the “director.”
Create a parallel drawing
For example, if the image is of a snowstorm, have them create a drawing with a different type of weather, like a hot and sunny beach. Then write a short paragraph describing it.
Picture Talk itself is such an amazing activity to use in Spanish class, but let’s get some extra mileage out of it to reduce your lesson planning time and give your students extra input in Spanish. It’s a low prep activity that your Spanish students will love. Ready to get started? Check out some of my favorite Picture Talk activities here. They are ZERO prep! I’ve even included a huge list of sample questions you can ask your students and follow up activities to check for comprehension. Enjoy!
