The Best Game for Building Circumlocution Skills in Spanish

September 28, 2022 No Comments

Don’t you hate when students default to the quick Google translate instead of circumlocuting a word in Spanish? We have been so trained to get quick answers from our phones that we are losing this important skill of circumlocution. So how can we best model it for our students? Read on to find out more about my favorite circumlocution game and access a free template to make a game for your students.

Tres veces – How to Play the Game

This game is played in partners. Each partner has a different set of words with “clues” in Spanish. They read the clues to their partner who has to guess which word is being described. I love this game because it shows students how to circumlocute!

Step One- Pick the Words

Choose an even number of words (20 is a good place to start). These could be vocabulary words or high frequency words.

Step Two- Create clues

Make up clues in the target language for each word. Use your best circumlocution skills! For example, if the word is “abuela” your clue could be “la made de me madre.”

Step three- Divide and Conquer

Divide the list into 2 parts. Students play this game in pairs. Each partner will have a different set of clues that they read to their partner. They get three chances to guess the word correctly. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins.
