Get Your Spanish Students Reading with These 3 Steps

August 16, 2023 No Comments

Are you interested in getting your lower level Spanish students reading more but not sure how to do it? Worried that it might overwhelm them? Then check out my scaffolded approach to reading. The key is to gradually expose them to more and more Spanish.

Scaffolded approach to reading:

Step 1: Start with circumlocution games. Give them “clues” to describe a word that they are studying. This gives them context without being overwhelming.

Step 2: Next, use short, interpersonal reading passages. Students read a letter from a pen pal in another country. This is an easy way to infuse culture while giving them a slightly longer passage to comprehend.

Step 3: Finally, students will be ready to read short stories. You can create your own, write them with your class, or check out mine. By gradually increasing the length of the reading exercises your students will get increased input and exposure to Spanish. By seeing the vocabulary and grammar in context, they acquire it faster.
