Need a long term Spanish sub plan? Try this!

October 20, 2023 No Comments

Raise your hand if being absent and leaving sub plans makes you stress as a Spanish teacher? Yep, me too. And when I was missing a 6 week chunk of time for my maternity leave, I was so worried about leaving my students in the hands of a random sub. I worried– what would their Spanish be like when I returned from this long term sub? So I created a 6 week unit that covers all the basics, includes lesson plans, standards, activities, and assessments. Everything that your Spanish sub would ever want! Read on to find out what your students will learn with this Spanish unit that is focused on high frequency verbs and the key building blocks for communication.

Week one: Weather & Calendar

In the first week, your students will focus on calendar talk and weather. This is such a concrete way to give them applicable Spanish and get them engaged. Get them up speaking with the task cards! Then check their comprehension with the reading passages.

Week two: Gustar

Let’s learn about one of my favorite Spanish high frequency verbs, Gustar! Your students will love sharing all their preferences while being exposed to infinitives like correr, escuchar música, leer, y tocar la guitarra.

Week three: Cognates

In the third week, your sub will teach them all about cognates, a perfect follow up to gustar. They will love playing all the games to help build their vocabulary with Spanish cognates.

Week four: Adjectives

¿Cómo eres? Students learn how to use Spanish adjectives while describing themselves and friends and family. There are even more cognates, like paciente, built in to help their comprehension.

Weeks five & six: Culture

Time to infuse the class with some culture! Students research the Spanish speaking countries, create a project and presentation, and teach their classmates about their country. This is a fun way to finish off the 6 week unit!

Stop stressing about long term sub planning and get your students using Spanish with their sub! Your sub will have everything they need and you can rest assured that your students will be where they need to be when you return. Ready to decrease your work load when planning?
