Do you feel like you are trying to squeeze culture into your Spanish lessons but it never feels like enough? Wouldn’t you love to expose your students to famous Spanish speaking artists while ALSO giving them tons of input with the high frequency Super 7 verbs? Then you will love these picture talk activities. Read on to find out more!
We can learn so much about a place or a culture through images. It provides a springboard to incorporate the 5 C’s: communication, culture, connections, comparisons, & communities. And a picture talk activity can be as quick as 5 minutes or as long as an entire class period. They are so versatile! Here are my steps for infusing a picture talk activity with culture.
Step 1: Pick an artist
Step 2: Artist Background Information
Option 1- Research the artist and present the information to the class.
Option 2- Students research the artist and present in small groups. Each student shares one fact.
Step 3: Country/Cultural Background Information
For example, if the image that I want to use shows the Tomatina festival in Spain, I will want to give my students background information about this. Sometimes I show them the picture first, ask them to make predictions about what is going on, and then I give them the “real story.”
