One of my favorite back to school activities for Spanish class is to teach my students how to greet one another using the expression “¿Cómo estás?” My old school textbook taught them a few basic expressions – boring! And I knew my students were anxious for more and to truly be able to express themselves. Curious how I gave them more options for answering ¿Cómo estás? without it being overwhelming? Read on!
Before school starts, I printed these adorable posters and hung them up on the inside of my classroom door. So my students would see it every day walking into class and once the door was closed, we could all view the expressions. When I would ask “¿Cómo estás?” students’ eyes will naturally wander over to the posters to accurately answer the question. I didn’t have to force them to memorize a giant vocabulary list of emotions. They wanted to learn the expressions that best described them. And bonus, many of them are cognates!
Other ways to use these emotions posters:
Just asking “¿Cómo estás? Out loud can get a little boring, right?! So let’s mix it up! Here are some additional ideas…
- Tape them to the door so you can greet students on the way in
- Pass them out for students to use during a story/picture talk/clip chat
- Ccreate a bulletin board in your classroom or in the hallway
- Hole punch/hang from ceiling
These posters will help you jumpstart the BTS season and get your classroom decorated! Click this link here to check them out today.
