Do you talk about the weather in your Spanish class? Do you include it in calendar talk? It’s such an easy way to get the class started and give students Spanish in context. But… you know that your students are always craving something new. They get bored very quickly. So how can we keep our conversations about weather interesting? Read on to find out how I mix up my discussion about weather every couple of days to keep my students on their toes.
Ideas for discussing weather
- Guess the temperature today (Fahrenheit and Celsius)
- Predictions. What will the weather be like this weekend? This winter?
- City of the day. What is the weather like today in Madrid? In Buenos Aires? (They can’t wrap their heads around the seasons being flipped in the southern hemisphere. I love to use this activity in the winter to get them thinking about it. )
- Task cards. Get them out of their seats and chatting using speaking task cards.
- Scavenger hunt. Find a city with cloudy weather today, rain, sunny, etc. You can give them a list of Spanish speaking cities to help them narrow their search.
- Unexpected videos. They love watching videos of unexpected weather like an ice storm in the south or a blizzard in Madrid.
- Natural disasters. Show news videos from around the world.
- Pictures of people. What weather are they dressed for? This is a great way to include authentic articles of clothing too.
- Travel– I’m going on a trip to Santiago. What clothes should I pack?
- Living earth app. Travel around the world.
- Students create a weather forecast. Give different groups different countries to report from.
- Watch weather report from different countries
