Your Spanish Students Don’t Know About César Chávez? How to Fix that ASAP

February 15, 2023 No Comments

Did you know that César Chavez day is March 31? Do your Spanish students know? This is the perfect time of year to teach them all about César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and the social justice issues surrounding migrant farm workers. Need some resources to help spread the word? Read on to find out about my favorites.

Short Activities:

Are your Spanish students curious about the life of Cesar Chavez & Dolores Huerta? This reading passage will teach your students about the life of Cesar Chavez. They read a letter from Chavez, answer comprehension questions, then write a response letter answering his questions. Key vocabulary and an infographic summarizing the main points are also included. There is also a reading passage about Dolores Huerta that can’t be missed!

Longer Activities:

This 1 week unit on César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and the documentary La cosecha has every activity you need to teach for a full week: key vocabulary in Spanish, vocabulary worksheets & games, reading passages, comprehension questions, movie guides, assessments, and more.

Social Justice Activities:

Once your students know about Chávez, let’s tie it to modern day challenges! Are you tired of teaching lessons about la comida with boring lists of food items? Students may like talking about their food preferences, but couldn’t we be doing SO much more with this topic and introducing social justice relating to access to food? Don’t your students love talking about “real things?” They want school to be meaningful. Then you will LOVE these lesson plans about food deserts. Your students will become the experts and even create a project to educate your school community about healthy eating choices.

I hope this sparks some ideas for how to incorporate César Chávez into your lesson plans for Chávez day on March 31.
