How I use Postcards for Reading Comprehension in All my Spanish Classes

April 17, 2024 No Comments

I absolutely love using these postcards from Spanish speaking countries as classroom decor! It’s a fast way to get my classroom decorated, I can use them to reference culture, and they make for a quick sub plan with a true/false worksheet where students just need to reference the pictures already displayed in class. But… these postcards can also be used as a research project for both upper and lower level students. Curious how I assign this project on Spanish speaking countries and then get them reading in Spanish? Read on!

Step One: Project on Spanish speaking countries:

I assign each student a different Spanish speaking country to research. This can easily be a quick 2 day project! Once they have some interesting facts, they fill out the back of the postcard detailing their visit there and all the cool activities they did. They can write this in English or Spanish depending on their level.

Step Two: How to create the reading activity

You can easily modify this project to match a lower or upper level class.

Reading for the lower levels:

Students do research on the countries and submit their findings in English. Then you can write up a quick 5 sentence summary of the countries in Spanish and a frew true/false questions. If you do one per week, you’ll have an activity for the rest of the year. And then you can save them for the following year so save yourself time lesson planning in the future.

Reading for the Upper levels:

This version is less work for the teacher! Have the students write the summaries in Spanish and submit them to you electronically so you can edit their work. Proof read their paragraphs and then display them as a gallery walk, use one per week to highlight the different countries, or integrate them into your unit on Hispanic Heritage month.

Let’s get going!

You should now have some ideas of how to repurpose this postcard activity to include more reading and writing activities. Looking for a ready made lesson plan for a 1 or 2 week unit on Spanish speaking countries? Check this out! Your students will learn so much about the Spanish speaking countries. AND all the lesson plans and activities are ready to go so you can save the time and stress planning and instead, go grab a hot cup of coffee. Enjoy!
