Are you teaching the Spanish sweet 16 verbs this year but aren’t really sure where to start? (Check out more about the Sweet 16 by CI teacher Mike Peto, a list that was expanded from the Super Seven verbs of Dr. Terry Waltz). Or perhaps you’re looking for some new activities to spark some creativity? Let me simplify the time you’re spending lesson planning for the Sweet 16 so you can have more free time to spend with friends, grab a hot coffee, and just relax. Here is another blog post to help language teachers like you! Read on to find out about my favorite time-saving activities for teaching the Spanish Sweet 16 verbs in the Spanish language!

1. Sweet Sixteen Verbs Guided Notes

Do your students need more practice with the Spanish Sweet 16 verbs? These Spanish guided notes activities include a notes sheet for each sweet 16 verbs in the present tense. Students then match English to Spanish sentences using high frequency verbs & cognates. An easy introduction, review of the Sweet 16 verbs, or pop up grammar. The teacher answer key makes it a breeze to go through the notes with students either out loud or on the overhead. Check them out for the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses! These activities are ideal for both middle school and high school students.

2. Weekend chat

Do your Spanish students need more practice asking basic questions about ¿Qué hiciste el fin de semana pasado? using the Sweet 16 verbs? Then you will love these interpersonal speaking task cards and read & draw worksheets. Each task card contains different questions. These activities provide excellent comprehensible input for students, making them a great way to enhance their understanding of Spanish verbs and high-frequency words in the target language.

3. Spanish Sub-Plan

Are you students familiar with the Spanish high-frequency verbs but need a little more practice reading & writing? Or do you need some fast, easy, Spanish sub plans to review the Super 7 verbs? Do your students need more reading comprehension activities, personal questions, & short story writing practice? Then you will love these Spanish worksheets that can also be used as emergency sub plans! They’re perfect for middle school and high school classes and help boost language acquisition.

4. Picture talk Activities

I absolutely love using Picture talks because my students get to hear new vocabulary in context and they hear the correct forms of the appropriate verbs! You will love these picture talk activities with the Super 7 verbs. The teacher projects the authentic paintings by the famous painters and then “circles” the Super 7 verb with questions for the class. The visual cue gives a nice anchor for context so the teacher can provide a foundation of the most often used words in Spanish. Plus, its a simple natural way to include question words in Spanish! Students then demonstrate comprehension by answering true/ false questions, writing statements, and identifying key symbols in the painting. At the end of this activity, they answer personal questions, making connections to the painting. These activities immerse students in the target language and help improve language acquisition through storytelling using high-frequency vocabulary. They’re so versitile you can start using them right at the beginning of the year!

5. Short stories

Do your students need more Spanish reading comprehension opportunities? Have you been thinking about adding reading to give them more input with Spanish high frequency verbs but not sure where to start? Looking to check their reading comprehension skills but don’t have the time to create so many new activities from scratch? Let me help you simplify your lesson planning with these short stories in Spanish.

Each Spanish short story comes with a week’s worth of lesson plans including pre-reading & reading comprehension activities, making checking their understanding of the text a snap. You can read them as a whole class, in small groups, or let individual students read them for independent work. Check them out here!

Start incorporating the Spanish sweet 16 verbs in your class today with little to no prep. As your students acquire them, you will love hearing how much they’re able to communicate in the Spanish language. Plus, you’ll save yourself so much time lesson planning and prepping that you’ll actually be able to leave school at 3 and enjoy your free time! Enjoy!
