I am obsessed with learning about culture in Spanish speaking countries. You too? Especially when I studied abroad it was the cultural components that fascinated me the most and made me want to learn more Spanish to better immerse myself. So I knew that I just had to create a fun cultural project for my students. BUT I didn’t want the project to consume too much of our time together. So here are my shortcuts for streamlining the research and pointing my Spanish students in the right direction.
Shortcuts for quick research on Spanish speaking countries:
- Official country websites (Google.com.AR for Argentina or Google.com.mx for Mexico)
- Culture grams – Talk to your library for access to the subscription
- National geographic
- State sponsored tourism site (like visitGuatemala.gt, peru.travel )
- Acceso.Ku.Edu
- Mexican museum of art
- El museo– Puerto Rican museum in New York City
- Lonely Planet – Here is an example of Perú
In streamlining the sites from which students can do their research, you not only cut down the amount of time spent on the project, but you also make sure that they’re using legitimate websites (as opposed to just using Wikipedia). Ready to get your students learning about Spanish speaking countries but short for time on planning/deciding all the details? Check out this ready made project that even comes with a PowerPoint template for students to fill out so they don’t miss any requirements.
